James Keane playing the Keanebox along with Fingal at the Andy McGann Traditional Irish Music Festival, East Durham N.Y, July 2007.

Here is a selection of reels from the band "Fingal", with Randal Bays on fiddle, Daithí Sproule on guitar and James Keane on the "Keanebox."

Fingal
Fingal is the name of an exciting new trio in the world of Irish traditional music - James Keane on button accordian, Randal Bays on fiddle, and Dáíthi Sproule on guitar and vocals. Though the trio is new, its members are vetran performers, known and respected worldwide for the depth and power of their playing. This is a band whose intention is to "get people riled up," by staying true to the rich tradition of Irish music. Their repertoire of jigs, reels, and songs in both Irish Gaelic and English is delivered with "power and passion, a joy to listen to." Read More (pdf)

James Keane and Friends - Live in Dublin.
  • The concert that Jim Kelly of "Irish Music Magazine" raved about: "The casual excellence of his playing betrays not only a considerable talent but also a respect and devotion to the music, which has been the hallmark of Keane's playing for a long time now. This is hardly surprising for a man cradled among the musical giants of the last generation: Leo Rowsome, Willie Clancy, Joe Cooley, Tommy Potts, Sonny Brogan, John Kelly, Paddy Taylor, and Tommy Reck.

  • Sibohan Long of "Hot Press" and now "The Irish Times" wrote, "This was a homecoming gig to be savoured, an all-too-rare tincture of the right stuff from a man who has revelled in its midst for upwards of four decades now.

James Keane - Live in Dublin
Review for 'Live in Dublin'
"Back in 1998, box player James Keane, a New York resident for many years, paid a visit to his old Dublin playing grounds and performed at Whelan's on Wexford Street. Good thing James slipped a cassette to the soundman and decided to release the recording, this is one making a case for Irish music being at its best when played outside the constraints of the recording studio. Backed by Garry O'Briain on mandocello and guitar, James plays with the kind of energy and luxuriant ornamentation which made the title of his 1980 LP "Roll Away the Reel World" so appropriate. By all accounts, this concert was a well attended social event, and James had no trouble bringing on stage former colleagues from the old days of the Castle Ceili Band, his brother Sean on fiddle and flute player Mick O'Connor, with Kevin Conneff adding bodhran for good measure. All this makes for a 73-minute CD packed with one great tune after another, many of them reels indeed." Rating: ****
